P+S Recruitment are pleased to be working on behalf of one of our clients, who are currently seeking a Shift Operator to join their team based in Bacton on a full-time, contract basis.

Reporting to: Operations Manager

Location: You will be based at Bacton Terminal with occasional travel when required.

Role Summary:

  • Operation, control and monitoring of the Gas Terminals and Pipeline, to ensure safe, secure, environmentally sound, reliable and efficient transportation of gas.
  • To control the Safe System of work and in doing so to provide leadership and direction to the maintenance team to facilitate safe and efficient work task execution and delivery of Bacton maintenance activities.
  • Provide support to the Operations Manager and Terminal Manager to assist them to flexibly and efficiently manage physical assets.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Maintain continuous control room operations through rostered shifts, including arranging cover and responding to emergency call-outs when required.
  • Safely and efficiently operate and monitor plant, equipment, and pipeline systems in line with statutory, environmental, and commercial requirements, ensuring gas quality, flow, and pressure targets are maintained.
  • Respond to incidents, emergencies, and plant failures, taking appropriate action to prevent escalation, coordinating resources, liaising with emergency services and stakeholders, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Maintain clear and comprehensive operational logs, handovers, and reporting systems, ensuring all activities, communications, and plant status updates are properly documented.
  • Manage and control Safe Systems of Work, including permits, risk assessments, method statements, isolations, and work audits, ensuring all activities are conducted safely and in compliance with procedures.
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams, contractors, and external parties to plan, assess, and execute work activities, including inspections, testing, and site monitoring.
  • Optimise plant performance and gas flow operations, working closely with Commercial Operations and external operators to maximise efficiency, reliability, and environmental compliance.
  • Carry out operational, maintenance, and technical support tasks within competency, including testing, purging, fault investigation, and minor remedial work.
  • Participate in training, emergency exercises, audits, and continuous improvement activities, contributing to process reviews, incident investigations, and operational development.
  • Build effective working relationships with internal teams, contractors, authorities, and stakeholders, promoting a collaborative “one team” approach and supporting knowledge sharing and development.

Person specification:

  • Min 10 years’ oil or gas asset operation or maintenance experience, or equivalent technical background in a similar industry
  • Preferred ONC or HNC equivalent or proven technical experience in gas terminal, and/or chemical facilities Operations and Maintenance
  • Good understanding of and experience of risk assessment requirements in Process Safety environment, ideally in the gas industry
  • Understanding of the safety requirements of COMAH sites, ideally in the gas industry.
  • Management of Major Emergencies training and assessment, with willingness to participate in relevant training to develop or maintain competency
  • Preferred NVQ Level 3 Processing Hydrocarbons
  • Able to maintain calm and focus under pressure, e.g. operational outage or emergency situations
  • Positive team working orientation and the ability to include others in a positive and constructive way to work in a team, across sites or discipline, minimising the negative impacts of a silo

Working Hours:

  • 12-hour shift pattern (plus handover)
  • Initially Mon-Fri, day shifts to learn the role
  • Then moving on to the shift rota

5 week cycle of nights and days – as below:

Week 1: Monday – Thursday (18:15 – 06:00)

Week 2: Monday – Wednesday (06:00 – 18:15) Friday – Sunday (18:15 – 06:00)

Week 3: Thursday – Sunday (06:00 – 18:15)

Week 4 / 5: No shifts
