Here at P&S Personnel we are pleased to be working on behalf of our client, an agricultural company based in Southampton who are currently seeking a Silo Operator to join their team. Assist in the operations of the site to meet the commercial requirements of SGT Ltd whilst maximising efficiency and upholding quality, health, safety and environmental standards.


·         Receive vehicle on incoming w/b and enter details of contract into the w/b computer system

·         Ensure a completed grain passport, with approved TASCC assured sticker if appropriate, is supplied

·         Instruct driver to park-up or direct to appropriate tipping pit

·         Receive vehicle on outgoing w/b, weigh and issue w/b ticket

·         Operate the Samplex CS90 to draw off samples from the vehicle

·         Use the Infratec machine to test the sample

·         Check sample for evidence of grain pests and or admixture

·         Enter sample results into the w/b computer system

·         Bag and label samples


·         Specialised testing of grain using different apparatus for the relevant grain types

·         Grain identification and variety

·         Bag and label samples

·         Enter sample results into weighbridge computer system

·         Deal with and prepare grain sample requests as required

·         Store/dispose of grain samples as per instructions contained in the storekeeper handbook

·         Prepare known reference samples as required

·         Perform daily control checks for all relevant apparatus using known reference samples

·         Undertake Proficiency tests as required and complete the relevant report sheet for submission

·         Maintain the laboratory in a clean and tidy condition

·         Report any defective laboratory equipment to one of the management team


·         Operation of the shiploader to load grain onto vessel

·         Load the vessel as per instruction

·         Liaise with control room operator regarding loading instructions

Control Room

·         Operation of control panel including ship loading scale

·         Directing lorries to various tipping pits

·         Input of information into w/b computer system

·         Liaise with shiploader operator regarding loading instructions

·         Movement of grain around the silo as instructed

·         Cleaning of storage bins as required

·         Preparation of stock sheets, stock declarations and temperature readings


·         Cleaning in and around the site as required

·         Within capability, non-technical general maintenance in and around site

Health, Safety and Environment

·         Assist the management to comply with Health and Safety, Fire and Environmental legislation

·         Ensure compliance with the company Health, Safety and Environmental policies

·         Co-operate and engage in health, safety and environment training as required

·         To keep records as required by Health and Safety

·         Provide support to the management to run the site in a safe and efficient manner

·         Comply with TASCC/COSSH regulations

·         Ensure site security is maintained at all times

Product Line Responsibilities

·         Operation of the weighbridge

·         Operation of the Samplex CS90

·         Operation of the shiploader

·         Operation of the control panel and scale

·         Operation of Bobcat and MEWP

·         Operation of all laboratory apparatus

·         Comply with company procedures at all times

·         Keep records as required by Quality Assurance or any relevant government legislation

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

Skill / Knowledge

·         Full driving license

·         Able to cope under pressure and work towards deadlines

·         Able to work at heights

·         IT literate with experience of using Microsoft office (an advantage)

·         A flexible approach to working hours specifically in peak periods

·         Excellent communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships both internally and externally.

·         Ability to work co-operatively with others and independently at times without supervision
